ABOUT KATHA KUTHUHALA:
Women. Stories. Stories of women. By women. Music-based storytelling repertoires exist all across India, drawing from tales from epics, puranas and bhagavatha. In each region, it is called by a specific name, based on the thematic content of the stories and the context of their performances. The various forms of storytelling although unique to a specific region reflects on a certain unity in Indian experience by expressing the shared heritage of India.
“To date, there is no documentation of women practioners of these art forms, enabling a broader and deeper inquiry and study into the form. With this performance festival, we hope to raise awareness of these rare art forms, while highlighting women as torchbearers of these traditions’ says Srivatsa Shandilya, Curator of the Festival and Director of the International Arts and Cultural Foundation.
